Passion Meets Profession

“A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

– John 13:34

I was brought up in the Catholic Church, regularly attending mass on Sundays and my CCD classes on Tuesday evenings.  As a child, I can remember my mother quoting the Golden Rule to me, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”  I remember having a real “Ah ha!” moment when we studied this passage in John and I realized that it was the same thing!

More than most of the things that I was taught as a child, this concept has always staid top of mind for me.  Throughout my life and experiences, I have always felt outrage when confronted with instances of discrimination and neglect.  From the small kid getting bullied on the playground to the flat out hate that accompanies racism, I have done my best to stand against these things and love my fellow man.

At the age of 16, I was hired to work a part time job as a barista in my local coffee shop.  I liked drinking coffee and I liked talking to people, so this seemed like a great fit for me.  Little did I know, I would one day be offered the opportunity to turn my passion into a profession.
