As we celebrate the wonder of the Christmas Season, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity share some of their favorite Christmas Cribs in various geographical locations here on Franciscanized World. May the Lord bless you and your families now and always!
San Xavier Mission
Notice the dark wooden faces, the figures of Mary and Joseph approving of any visitor who reaches out to pull on the cradle hammock where the baby Jesus lies. In 1982 Tom Franco was commissioned to create the scene from desert materials. The set includes a ramada or ‘wahto”, three sheep, an angel playing a flute, a village dog, and “olla”. The figurines are hand-carved, hand-painted, have real hair, and clothing of real cloth. Saguaro ribs, yucca, mesquite, and real wool are also part of the design. Jesus is not yet swinging in the hammock.
