Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Pamela Catherine composed ‘Doorways to Freedom’ for a Motherhouse July 4, 2013 flag raising ceremony. We invite you to contemplate with us the deeper implications of this poem.
237 years gone by,
a door had been constructed
through the ideologies of numerous minds,
the ideologies framed by the rights for the people that be,
the rights of life, pursuit of happiness and liberty,
United as ONE, we passed through that door,
since 1776, tyranny ruled us no more.
Yet, something has taken place
over the course of time
not a rule of tyranny but a rule of the “I”, the “me,” the “mine.”
A world now fighting for solely the “ME”
was this our Forefathers definition of liberty?
“My way or the highway
forget about you
and this idea of being ONE
will certainly not do!”
However, if we look through the crowds of the “Me,”
another door has been framed
calling us back to a unity.
Through this door, this Door of Faith
we are beckoned forth in a call of grace
to reconnect to a life from 2000 years before
the life of our blessed and beloved Lord.
A life offering freedoms our Forefathers knew
based not on our wants but on having the rights of what we ought to do.
So as we step forth
may our lives come to be
a credible witness of the true call of liberty.
