“Holy Water” was written as a hymn with reverence for that most basic & pure element of life. This acute appreciation was my inspiration for the composition and a reminder to myself not to take it for granted. As water becomes increasingly more threatened as an environmental resource, I hope we can learn to become better stewards of the planet we have been entrusted to care for.

Kurt Kaiser
In 1969 Ralph Carmichael and I collaborated on a musical, “Tell It Like It Is.” It was written to get young people involved in the church. After reviewing what we had written, we decided there needed to be closer, a modern “Just As I Am.” On a Sunday night I was sitting in our den by the fireplace where there were remnants of a fire, and it occurred to me that it only takes a spark to get a fire going…and the rest came very quickly. My wife suggested that I should say something about shouting it from mountaintops, and that ended up in the third verse. It only took about 20 minutes to write the lyrics. Afterwards my wife and I went for a walk, letting the song ruminate in our minds. I am always amazed how the Lord can take a little song and use it to reach so many people. It has been sung at countless weddings and funerals, at ordination services, by the Sea of Galilee, in Rhodesia, on the aircraft carrier Enterprise, and lots of camps. There are many stories surrounding its usage, but this ought to suffice.

O Vos Omnes is written by Blake R. Henson. The text quotes but one verse from the Lamentations of the 
Prophet Jeremiah (1:2). It expresses profound sorrow felt among all who pass along the way, in the Christian sense, the Way of the Cross of Calvary. This sense of profound sorrow was concretely realized when St. Anne Choir sand this powerful text as the Execution Wall in the Camp at Auschwitz on All Soul’s Day, 2007.

I have been working with our sisters and brothers in need for many, many years including by establishing a Catholic Worker House for indigent persons with AIDS in Chicago back in the 1980’s until today by means of a great big vehicle we call the Care’avan. I am also co-founder of the Song and Spirit Institute for Peace which promotes ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, reconciliation, peacemaking and education through Music, Art, organic farming and compassionate acts of community service, e.g. there Care’avan.
