This St. Francis Weekend highlights mercy. Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity anticipated the feast with a novena asking St. Francis to intercede for us that we may walk worthy of the holy vocation given to each of us and be worthy of the merciful promises of Christ.

St. Francis

October 3 begins as a day of fast and abstinence culminating in the Transitus of St. Francis, a celebration of St. Francis entering heaven. Here’s the introduction of the ritual that unites us with other Franciscans everywhere in the world in this coming year of mercy:Franciscan Sisters Leone, Karen and Johanna

Welcome, all you who gather here on this eve when the Church invites us to commemorate the death of one of God’s favorite people, “Francis of Assisi who took the Gospel as his way of life, made faith grow and be renewed in the Church at the same time as he renewed society.” As we await this Transitus service, we are reminded that tonight is an opportunity for all of us to prepare ourselves for the year ahead which has been proclaimed by our holy Father, Pope Francis, as an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Beginning on December 8th the whole Church will contemplate the mystery of God’s mercy, the “wellspring of joy, serenity and peace…” the “bridge that connects God and all people, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever.”

This evening we remember the death of Saint Francis to recall the joy, serenity and peace of this man of Assisi who proclaimed to his followers hope in God’s mercy.

Watch for more coverage of one of our favorite times of the year!
