Franciscan Sister Mary Frances Maher shares about her experiences in reaching out to St. Mary School, Hibert, WI.
Last year there was a request from local Catholic School Principals to have Franciscan Sisters come to visit with their students as there are no longer Sisters teaching in their schools. Sister Marlene Schwaller and Sister Mary Frances Maher were invited to St. Mary’s in Hilbert. We decided to visit on a monthly basis. Our first visit in October was a ‘get to know you time’. We were warmly welcomed with a question and answer period and then, were free to visit the classrooms. What amazed both of us was how well equipped the school was and the technology that the students were using. Also, the teachers were very kind and interesting.
School Liturgies are Tuesdays in Hilbert. Since I am a veteran, we were invited to come for their special Liturgy honoring vets. A reception followed in the Church Hall. Veterans were recognized and given a goodie bag with flag themed items (key chain, pin, mint), and a card of thanks. All of the students participated in the program from making decorations to having parts in a play. Taps was played and everyone sang “America”. Then, it was time for visiting and having refreshments. It was a memorable experience for both of us.
