Franciscan Sister Ann Carla Baumann shares tried teaching ideas to celebrate World Day of Peace. Every school day provides moments to work for peace and grow in our awareness of this gift from God.

Messages of peace were very evident at Holy Family School recently. To celebrate World Day of Peace, the students and teachers formed a peace sign on our playground to show their peaceful companionship. As you may guess, making such a symbol with this number of children was an exercise of patience and working together. It was a just another example of daily activities that call for peace education. On the lawn near St. Agnes Church, pinwheels bearing words of peace blew in the wind. Tolerance, acceptance, harmony, love were words decorating the pinwheels. A few quotes from outside sources were also displayed. “Peace begins with a smile.” – Mother Teresa. “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.” – Jimmy Hendrix. Words from our students captured the meaning of peace. “War is bad because the commandment says ‘Do not kill.’” “Harmony is not just for the choir; it’s for our lives, too.” Indeed, the wind-propelled signs added an additional beauty to our surroundings causing us to stop, read and pray.May God bless all those who live and promote peace.
