Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity share La Guadalupana, a traditional hymn to Our Lady of Guadalupe performed by Los Liricos Jr. – La guadalupana (Serenata a la virgen de Guadalupe) this December. On the American continent Marian devotion is frequently centered around the figure of our Blessed Mother as she appeared in December of 1531 to the Native American Saint Juan Diego at Tepeyac Hill in the area of modern-day Mexico City. The painting pictured here of Our Lady is one found at our Motherhouse. It the gift of our Sister Maria Guadalupe Martinez Lopez’s family to us. It is a replica of the image imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma.

La Guadalupana (The Virgin of Guadalupe)

English translation:

From heaven, one beautiful morning

the Virgin of Guadalupe

the Virgin of Guadalupe descended to Tepeyac

the Virgin of Guadalupe

the Virgin of Guadalupe descended to Tepeyac

Her arrival brought happiness,

light and harmony

light and harmony (and freedom)

light and harmony

light and harmony (and freedom)

to all in Anahuac.

When Juan Diego passed through the mountain

and drew closer when

and drew closer when he heard it sung:

and drew closer when

and drew closer when he heard it sung

“Juan Diego” the Virgin said:

“This is the hill I’ve chosen

for my altar to be built.”

With her hands clasped together,

She was of Mexican descent

she was of Mexican descent in both her visage and demeanor

she was of Mexican descent

she was of Mexican descent in both her visage and demeanor

Among the painted roses of the tilma

she deemed to leave behind

her beloved image

she deemed to leave behind

her beloved image.

As of then, to be a Guadalupan

was something essential

for the Mexican people

was something essential

for the Mexican people

For their sorrows she kneels

and elevates her gaze

and elevates her gaze towards Tepeyac

and elevates her gaze

and elevates her gaze towards Tepeyac

Dearest mother of all the people of Mexico

who are thou in heaven, pray for us to God

who art thou in heaven

who art thou in heaven, pray for us to God
