Temporary Professed

Called to Be a Temporary Professed Franciscan Sister

After professing vows for the first time, Temporary Professed Sisters receive a black veil, our Rule of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis, Constitutions and Directory, and sign our Community Register . This celebration takes place at our Motherhouse.

Our young Sisters strive to grow in a loving knowledge of God and to integrate prayer and daily living with continued emphasis on the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience as they walk with light and unswerving step in pursuit of Gospel perfection to which the Spirit of the Lord has called them.

How does it feel to be a Temporary Professed Sister?

It has been a wonderful journey. Any place you go to, even if it is a new job, you are going to have your down moments and your up moments. And the up here definitely outweigh everything. I don’t know how to put it just that there is this knowledge that God is leading me in the direction to follow Him. I’ve made my first vows and I have been extremely happy ever since. At the same time you don’t know where God is taking all of it. It is a lot of trust and living in the moment. But it has been very good so far.”

What else happens as a Temporary Professed Sister?

Temporary Professed Sisters Pursue the studies and experiences necessary for apostolic service. They are assigned to a local community and an apostolic work when properly prepared.

In addition to a summer program, a two-day mid-year experience is planned at the Motherhouse each year.

Like all Community members, Temporary Professed Sisters may enjoy two weeks with family and friends. They are encouraged to be present for significant family celebrations.

This was not anything I would have chosen for myself. To know that with each step forward-entering as a postulant, entering novitiate, now as a temporary professed-it is surprising to me that I continue to be happy and that happiness does continue to grow.”

When can one expect to make Perpetual Profession?

By mutual decision with the Congregation, Sisters make perpetual profession after 3-5 years. A special one-month intensive program of prayer and renewed instruction on the vows anticipates the celebration of Perpetual Profession on the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels, the Portiuncula.
