As United States’ citizens commemorate the inauguration of a new president, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity recall moments from Chicago’s recent March for Life, a real family-friendly celebration. Bright yellow ‘Life’ balloons, upbeat music and strong drum beat brought home the theme “Life wins”.
Lawmakers and pro-life leaders spoke to the thousands of people in the crowd including bus loads of people from WI and other neighboring Midwest states. All rallied at the city of Chicago’s federal courts.
One of the speakers, Cardinal Blaise Cupich, thanked those gathered for remaining vocal about a controversial topic. He acknowledged that until changes are made by government officials, it’s hard to feel society has a future. His message then focused on families and how they are supported “through the advocacy of Right to Life laws, through adequate healthcare legislation, for advocating for family leave policies in the workplace that support moms and dads and by enacting laws that keep families together.”
This quote highlighted in the pre-march festivities from Dr. Mildred Jefferson, Pro-Life Activist, captured the crowd and the mood of the day: “The fight for the right to life is not the cause of a special few, but the cause of every man, woman and child who cares not only about his or her own family, but the whole family of man.”
May the Lord bless our country this day, a nation of families with hopes and dreams, working for justice and peace for all. May Mary under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, intercede for us.
