Franciscan Sister Joins St. Lawrence High School Seminary Faculty

St. Lawrence Seminary High School students are in for a treat! Joining the staff this August is Sister Marie Kolbe Zamora from the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity. Sister will be teaching Latin and religion courses and is excited to “share the life and love of the Lord Jesus with SLS students in everyday encounters.”

“Faith in the living God is the true life and love we all seek,” Sister says. She credits her parents for giving her the greatest gift: baptism, which she has continued living out with her Franciscan Sisters. Since a young age, Sister has had a deep relationship with the Lord and has loved discovering the new ways God reveals His plan to her. “The walk of each person with the Lord is absolutely unique. My own ‘way’ to God has involved serious study, but that study has always been engaged out of love for God and a fascination with Him,” Sister said.

Sister’s first teaching job was at Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha where she taught religion and served as the assistant soccer coach for the freshman girls’ team. As a young girl, Sister would follow the FIFA World Cup odds whenever possible. She’s also a Houston Texans / Rockets / Astros fan since she is originally from that area, but she willingly cheers on the Packers when they are not playing Houston.

For the last number of years, Sister has been teaching at the collegiate level and working with the Green Bay Diocese to articulate its vision for discipleship formation. It was her superior general that presented to her the job opening at SLS for consideration. Capuchins have always been a gift in Sister’s life, and this influence kept her heart open to the idea of returning to high school teaching. Jesus made it clear that He was inviting her to trust Him so “once the choice to teach [at SLS] became a matter of trusting Jesus, I was in!” Sister shared.

If you want to talk books with Sister, start with The Hobbit and The Wind in the Willows; both are novels she has read multiple times. She also has an affinity for St. Maximilian Kolbe, her religious namesake. This more modern saint was a Conventual Franciscan priest who was an enormous advocate of total consecration to the Immaculate Mother for the conversion of sinners and enemies of the Catholic Church. In 1941, during World War II, this Polish priest offered his own life at the Auschwitz concentration camp in place of a fellow prisoner who had a wife and child.
