Before the snow whitened the landscape, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity documented a stop at St. Mary Magadelene Church, Waupaca, WI in the Diocese of Green Bay. In this Year of Faith, we hope you consider this prayerful spot on your own journey to God. The Lord bless pastor Father Amalraj Roche and the people of God in this faith-filled parish.
As you approach St. Mary Magdalene Church, its bell tower calls you home. Inside, Oakland Township, MI Artist Suzanne Young sculpted a welcoming image of the witness of the resurrection that stands near the doorway into the worship area. St. Mary Magdadene truly greets all visitors near and far.
The octagonal baptismal font symbolizes the eighth day, the day of resurrection. It quickly reminds us that in baptism we die to sin and rise to new life in Christ. The round upper bowl is representative of the womb for it is here in the waters of Baptism that we are reborn. Our commitment to Christ is highlighted in the cross inlay in the tile floor imaging the cross that we mark on ourselves everytime we use the font. The Paschal candle -light of Christ-is lit here at the time of baptism.
Looking forward to the front, on either side of the entryway into the Blessed Sacrment Chapel, two trees frame the opening. Michigan artist Michael R. Kapitan carved human figures representing our ancestors in faith of basswood. On the left is the Tree of Judah. Abraham and Sarah are constructed with Moses, David, Ruth, Isaiah and John the Baptism built on top of the other. On the right, the tree of Christ depicts major figures in Christian history. Beginning with Peter and Paul on the bottom, St. Isadore the Farmer, Bishop Oscar Romero, Dorothy Day, Blessed John XXIII and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta encourage us to hand on what has been given to us.
St. Francis is at home here as are Mary and Joseph, and St. Katharine Drexel. Shrines hold some life size statues.
