Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Sharon Paul recounts a recent weekend adventure from Cambridge, OH.

Eucharist at Mount Calvary Cemetery Cambridge OH Mount Calvary Cemetery Eucharist for Memorial DayFranciscan Sisters of Christian Charity at St. Benedict’s Convent, Cambridge, Ohio began our Memorial Day Adventure by remembering all our Service Men and Women who have and are serving our country and all our beloved dead by attending a Mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery celebrated by Father Bob Borer and Father Paul Hrezo.

Appreciating the blessing of many cultural traditions found in America, Sister Carolee Vanness, Sister Sue Ann Hall, Sister Mary Gabriel Van Dreel and I then proceeded to enjoy Amish Country.  We met four Amish buggies. We enjoyed the rolling hills and the beautiful farms along the way.  We ate at the Dutchman Pantry in Strausburg, OH and the homemade Amish food was fantastic.

Our next stop was to Lehman’s in Kidron, OH which started as a small hardware store serving local Amish needs started in 1955. Gathering four pre-Civil War era buildings under one soaring roof is today a place to embrace the past run by the Jay Lehman family.  There are thousands of products with antiques springled in between.  There are gardening, toys, kitchenware, hearth products and home goods. The shopping experience is almost a quarter mile long. One of the favorite spots in the store for us was Favid Warther’s intricate wood carvings on display.  We met a family from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana who were attending a Reunion nearby and they were also enjoying the carvings shown here.

The Memorial Day Adventure came to a close too quickly but we have many more places to explore next year!
