Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity received a light of hope to end human trafficking by accepting the invitation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, Milwaukee WI to hear guest speaker Simona Verona Botezatu, Catholic Charities Immigration Minister, San Bernardino, CA. The particular topic was “Human Trafficking: Through a Global and Immigration Lens.”
Participants learned it is necessary to confront the darkness, the demand, the traffickers to see if more collaboration can be made with the police, the justice system and the Church. There is a need to do more research and to open the door to educate more people. February 8 is the Feast of St. Josephine Bakhita, the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.
It is thought at least 21 million people are victims of human trafficking worldwide and 2.5 million fall into the snares of traffickers every year. Human Trafficking is the third most profitable business after drugs and arms trafficking.
