Franciscan Sister Marie Kolbe Zamora, assistant professor of theology at Silver Lake College, recently published an article in the oldest journal of Franciscan studies.

Franciscan Sister Marie Kolbe Zamora called to be Theology professor at Silver Lake College of the Holy FamilyHer article, “The Holy Spirit, Soul of the Church: The Pneumatological Enigma of Bonaveneture’s Ecclesiology,” ran in Miscellanea Francescana, an Italian journal of theological sciences and Franciscan studies.

The journal is housed at the Pontifical University of St. Bonaventure in Rome known as the Seraphicum. It was begun in 1886 and has been the official journal of the university for more than 75 years.

Sister Zamora’s article focuses on two ways of thinking about the church: one that emphasizes formal institutions and hierarchical structure, and a more spiritual (pneumatological) one that emphasizes the work of the Holy Spirit within each of the baptized.Franciscan Sisters highlight Holy Spirit Window St. Francis of Assisi Manitowoc

“These two ways of thinking about the church have been in tension, perhaps since the beginning, and they are in tension within Bonaventure’s ecclesiology.  Based on the way Bonaventure includes the Holy Spirit throughout the theology he develops around the sacraments, this article claims that Bonaventure implicitly understands the Holy Spirit to be the soul of the church,” Sister Zamora said.
