Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity stream the music of Spiritu, liturgical musicians from Nativity of Our Lord in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Find here an awesome photo of one of the intricate stained-glass windows at Nativity, taken by Nativity parishioner Therese Steinhoff. Spiritu member Damien Riehl took the image of the beautiful church taken from the choir loft.

About Spiritu

Our recordings grew out of years of music provided for liturgies at Nativity of Our Lord in Saint Paul, Minnesota. These recordings capture some of our favorites. Offering our music at hundreds of Sunday Masses, weddings, funerals, prayer services, retreats, and other events is a privilege and a joy.

Our music is acoustic, prayerful, and eclectic. The variety reflects our tastes and musical backgrounds, ranging from degrees in classical music to many years of experience performing live in bands or as a solo act around the Twin Cities. Whether we’re doing a familiar church hymn, a traditional American melody, or contemporary Christian music, we hope to touch the spirit of our listeners. (website: https://spiritumusic.com/)

Shelter Me: A Prayer-Song in the Time of the Covid-19 Pandemic by Michael Joncas

Michael Joncas, the St. Paul priest, theologian and prolific composer of liturgical music including “On Eagle’s Wings,” wrote and published this new song in spring 2020 in response to the global shared experience of COVID-19. Members of Spiritu recorded it from the shelter of our homes.

In this dark and difficult time, we wish you the shelter of God’s peace.

Grand Choeur Dubois – Pipe Organ duet in the time of a pandemic

Patrick Henning, principal organist and director of music, also recently recorded a virtual video of an organ duet. Two organists separated by 1000 miles, make music to lift spirits. Patrick Henning (St. Paul, MN) and Corey Powell (Asheville, NC) are friends who met while completing their Master of Music degrees at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Both this video and the Shelter Me video were produced by Damien Riehl . Be inspired.

I loved the song and organ duet. Music is very uplifting for me. It pulls me up out of myself. Thank you to all who are lifting our spirits these days. You are helping us through the Pandemic.

To Spiritu: I’m a lifelong, but lapsed, Catholic since the death of my husband ten years ago. I’m also a choral member, missing the high of singing together because of the pandemic. I’ve been feeling a call back to God and Church; then Joe Biden mentioned “On Eagles’ Wings,” one of my favorite hymns. That sent me googling Michael Joncas, and I found your visual rendition of “Shelter Me.” What a lovely reminder of God’s presence, even in the darkest days! Thank you for such a perfect performance, for moving me to tears, for letting me sing along, and for helping me on my journey.
