A Poem for July 4 by Franciscan Sisters

Sister JulieAnn Sheahan

July 03, 2022

As we celebrate July 4th tomorrow, we share a poem written by Sister Cecilia Joy Kugel and Sister Maria Guadalupe Martinez Lopez entitled ” Sacrifice”. We invite you to reflect with us as we remember all those generous souls, many our own family members, who sacrifice for us today and sacrificed for us in the past.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice, sweet and noble sacrifice

The sacrifice of one’s life

For the good of a call,

A call to serve,

A call to act.

So much sacrifice,

The comforts of home gone forever

Amidst the sound of cannon fire,

Fire, and smoke so dense

One is thankful for what they do not see,

Some scarred forever by what they observe.

Sacrifice,

For people they knew,

People they would never meet.

People who might only know their names from memorial walls.

Yet, they sacrificed,

Knowing their names might never be etched anywhere,

But they are forever etched in the heart of God.

We honor those who serve

We honor those who served

We honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

Thank you, Srs. Maria Guadalupe & Cecilia Joy for the poem. It’s amazing how many men & women have given their life that we may have freedom. May they rest in the peace & love of Christ. Thanks to all those who have served & are presently serving our country!
