Franciscan Sisters Picnic with Manitowoc Serrans

Sister JulieAnn Sheahan

July 19, 2022

July is Serran time for the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and other religious and clergy in the Manitowoc area. Not only can one expect a summer barbeque, but some wonderful hospitality from a group of men and women who believe in Gospel Service. The Serrans also invite Roncalli High School students active as Lasallian Youth to serve among us in various table waiting activities.

Who are the Serrans? Serra USA was formed in 1935.  It happened when a small group of lay people in Seattle decided to form an organization to promote and foster vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life. As a result, they chose Father Junipero Serra, the great missionary, as their patron and named the organization SERRA Club of Seattle. Serrans are now lay Catholics found around the world.  All are dedicated to foster and promote vocations to the Church.

Fr. Jerry Prusakowski OFM is the Manitowoc chaplain. The group meets at one of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish sites regularly and this is where the summer gathering takes place. Before the main course of picnic foods, we all pray together the Serran prayer and traditionally sing ‘Thanks Be To God”.  Yes, prayer is ever at the center of everything.

To complete the meal a delicious assortment of desserts including ice cream are enjoyed. A spirited game of bingo follows. On this evening our Sisters make sure they share the winnings around the table so that everyone ends up walking out the door with a prize.

September 10 we will be hosting the Serrans at our Motherhouse. They are invited for Eucharist and the noon meal.  It is good to share St. Francis’ call to ‘rebuild My Church’ with these faith-filled companions on the journey. We pray for their families and their many intentions.
