Message for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

With celebrations of Our Blessed Mother Mary so much part of the Advent experience, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity share a message for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the Diocese of Green Bay Fr. Ryan Starks, pastor of St. Therese Parish, Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dear Friends,

My name is Fr. Ryan Starks, and I am pastor of St. Therese Parish in Appleton, Wisconsin. Nearly two-thirds of our parishioners are of Mexican origin, and so we feel a special closeness to Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was near Mexico City, on Tepeyac Hill, where Mary appeared in 1531 under the name we recognize today, Our Lady of Guadalupe.

From the Cross, Jesus gave Mary to us to be our mother. A mother wants what’s best for her children, and Mary knows that what is best for us is Jesus. By appearing with the same complexion and speaking in the same language as the locals, they trusted her message far more than they trusted the missionary priests. Her gentle motherly love and her message, backed by her miraculous image imprinted on Juan Diego’s clothing (which can still be seen today!) led millions of Mexicans to give their life to Jesus, and become Catholics soon after her appearance.

Each year, our parish celebrates the Feast day on the Sunday prior to December 12th with a large Mass at noon, and fiesta with delicious food to follow. We also gather in our Church on the night of December 11th for prayer and song, and to bring Mary flowers and mañanitas at midnight.

If you remember one thing this December 12th, remember this quote from Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego (and to us all): “Am I not here with you? I who am your mother?” Mary loves you, and if you let her into your life, she will lead you to Jesus.

Mi nombre es Padre Ryan Starks y yo soy párroco de la parroquia St. Therese en Appleton, Wisconsin. Casi dos tercios de nuestros feligreses son de origen mexicano y por eso sentimos una cercanía especial a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Fue cerca de la Ciudad de México, en el Cerro del Tepeyac, donde María se apareció en 1531 con el nombre que hoy reconocemos, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Desde la Cruz, Jesús nos entregó a María para ser nuestra madre. Una madre quiere lo mejor para sus hijos, y María sabe que lo mejor para nosotros es Jesús. Al aparecer con la misma complexión y hablar en el mismo idioma que los lugareños, confiaron en su mensaje mucho más que en los sacerdotes misioneros. Su dulce amor maternal y su mensaje, respaldados por su imagen milagrosa impresa en la ropa de Juan Diego (¡que todavía se puede ver hoy!) llevaron a millones de mexicanos a entregar su vida a Jesús y convertirse al catolicismo poco después de su aparición.

Cada año, nuestra parroquia celebra la fiesta el domingo anterior al 12 de diciembre con una gran misa al mediodía y una fiesta con deliciosa comida a continuación. También nos reunimos en nuestra Iglesia la noche del 11 de diciembre para orar y cantar, y para llevarle flores y mañanitas a María a medianoche.

Si recuerdas algo este 12 de diciembre, recuerda esta cita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe a Juan Diego (y a todos nosotros): “¿No estoy yo aquí contigo? ¿Yo que soy tu madre?” María te ama y si la dejas entrar en tu vida, ella te llevará a Jesús.
