Continuing the Vocation Sojourn, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sister Mary Ann Spanjers and Sister Julie Ann Sheahan arrived at the University of Wisconsin Stout Campus Ministry, Menomonie, Wisconsin, on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The wind was strong outside, however, an equally powerful movement of the Holy Spirit blew inside the Main Street, storefront-like building. Campus Minister Becca Sheahan and students were quick to offer hospitality. In fact, a few students were hard at work, making dinner. Midwest Capuchin Franciscans Vocation Director Father Nathan Linton, OFM Cap arrived before us. By 5:30 P.M. Father Nathan and Father Mano, Chaplain and pastor of nearby St. Joseph Parish, presided at the student Eucharistic liturgy held in the bottom floor of the center. Following Mass, student leaders made invitations to upcoming faith-sharing groups for Lent. Next, all shared the prepared meal of Pigs in the Blanket and Alfredo pasta. The company and the food encouraged lively conversation at each of the tables. The presentation, The Eucharist-Adoration to Action immediately followed the meal. Sister Mary Ann and Father Nathan shared various aspects of Franciscan Eucharistic Spirituality.
Students’ feedback revealed an openness to the Franciscan message. Enjoy some of their responses regarding what was appreciated about the evening
“I enjoyed hearing about Franciscan life as I have not had much exposure to that type of vocation.”
“I appreciated being able to have both men and women religious speak. Along with their individual experiences and about Franciscan Spirituality.”
“I appreciated how much the speakers emphasized what Eucharist is and how powerful it can be. I loved also when Father spoke about the talents of compassion, etc. and how important they are. Also Sister saying ‘not all Sisters are quiet.”
“One thing I appreciated is that there are reflections from normal Catholics like me in the videos.”
“I appreciated the fact that I was able to learn more about my relationship with God and how I can grow spiritually deeper within him in my life.”
“I really loved how eager Sister Mary Ann was to make it known that God is in love with us.”
Before dispersing for the night, a group picture was taken. One of the students volunteered to bring our Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity vocation poster to University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Newman Parish. Other young adults helped transform the presentation space back into a banquet hall. Dishwashers also happily attended to the job at hand. As St. Francis heard his own call from Christ to ‘rebuild My church’ in his own way, so in this place, individuals were generous in offering service and bringing Christ’s light to others in the here and now.
