On this July 4, 2025 in commemoration of our United States of America Independence Day, Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity share a prayer written by Sister M Nathaniel Jenks. May the Lord bless us with peace in our nation, in our world, in our hearts. (Photos: Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sister Victoria Masil, Queen of Peace Friary, Burlington, Wisconsin

Petition

O Lord, may I, like Francis go

Where there is hatred, love to sow

Where there is darkness, fear or dread

Thy Precious light and peace to spread.

Where there is pain or injury

Sweet pardon spread for love of Thee

Where doubt has knocked or fierce despair

Leave burning faith and blest hope there.

Where there is sickness, health restore

And sadness, joy forevermore

Lord, may I seek for love of Thee

More to console than consoled be.

Seek more, my God, to understand

To swiftly lend a helping hand

And care not, though my deed be good,

That someone has misunderstood.

May I seek, Lord, to empty me

And if not loved, still loving be

For in our giving we receive,

In pardoning obtain reprieve..

The prayers are very inspiring. I am a Franciscan Missionary of Mary. I am preparing to go to a nursing home so please pray for me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and prayers.

It is a joy to read this piece by Sister Nathaniel as we celebrate July 4th. I loved sister Nathaniel’s wit and humor and unfailing Common Sense! I did not know the side of her that took a prayer and deepened it with her own language. Thank you for posting this!
